Where it all began — the people, places and history that made me who I am before I set foot in Alabama. From my father’s poetry readings in Damascus to the circuitous road that led here, Roots traces the threads that connect jasmines to magnolias, my homeland to my adopted home.

This is the story of chasing what Syria could not give me: the freedom to speak and create, justice that does not depend on who you know, peace that does not disappear overnight and the chance to make dreams come true.
